BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity volleyball team breezed through its opening match in the state Class 3A-East region playoffs, sweeping visiting Northeast of Anne Arundel County in three games to advance to the region semifinals.
The Seahawks entered Monday’s Class 3A-East quarterfinal as the number-four seed in the region and took on fifth-seeded Northeast at home. Decatur finished the regular season with a 13-2 mark and narrowly missed a Bayside Conference championship, falling to powerhouse North Caroline in three tough games last week.
However, the state playoffs represent a fresh start for the Seahawks and they made it look relatively easy in the first match of the Class 3A-East region tournament. In the first game, the Seahawks jumped out to a quick early 21-7 lead and cruised to the 25-8 win. The second game followed a similar pattern with Decatur executing in all phases to win 25-14. Finally, the Seahawks ended any hope for a Northeast rally with a precision 25-10 dismantling of the Eagles in the third and final game.
