Habitat To Build Berlin Homes
BERLIN – Habitat for Humanity of Worcester County, Inc. has announced the groundbreaking ceremony for the first of three homes to be built on Flower Street in Berlin on Saturday, June 20 at 10:30 a.m.
The first family to be selected by Habitat for Humanity is a family of four, The Carpenters. The construction of a Habitat for Humanity home is usually a six-month long process, so the Carpenters are hoping to move in around the holidays. The Carpenters’ new home will be approximately 1,350 square feet in size with four bedrooms. The recipient family is required to put in 200 “sweat equity” hours and anyone in the family over the age of 18 may contribute. The majority of the “sweat equity” work is dedicated to the actual construction of the new home. The remaining sweat equity may be earned by community service or other Habitat projects. The head of household is also required to attend financial and homeownership classes.
“Thank you to God and all the kind hearts in our community for the opportunity for my family to have our own home. It is giving me such a sense of security knowing my children will always have a place to call home,” Mrs. Carpenter said.
All of the homes to be built on Flower Street are following an integrated “green” plan for design and construction by local architect and Habitat board member David Quillin. Among the energy efficient features included in the home design are a tight building envelope, a sealed and conditioned crawl space, use of 2×6’s for maximum insulation, environmentally compatible building materials, high efficiency mechanicals and energy efficient appliances and lighting.
It is important to note that tax credits in the amount of $27,000.00 from the State of Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development were awarded to Worcester County Habitat for the Flower Street project. Maryland businesses interested in donating cash or goods to the Habitat project may earn tax credits equal to 50 percent of the value of the contribution. Hospital Honored
SALISBURY – Peninsula Regional Medical Center, a 362-bed tertiary care facility in Salisbury, has been presented its fourth Gold Seal of Approval™ for health care quality by The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
The Joint Commission recently awarded Peninsula Regional Disease-Specific Care Certification for the treatment of Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) or heart attack. Currently Peninsula Regional is the only hospital or medical center in Maryland, Delaware or Washington, D.C. to hold this prestigious distinction in AMI.
In 2008, 748 people were treated for AMI at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, the regional trauma center for the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Medical Center staff work closely with local EMS to quickly diagnose people who may be experiencing a heart attack. That relationship allows for professional care in the field and rapid transport to the Medical Center’s Emergency/Trauma Center.
“Peninsula Regional voluntarily pursued this comprehensive, independent evaluation to enhance the safety and quality of the care we provide,” said Medical Center President Peggy Naleppa. “We’re proud to achieve this distinction from the Joint Commission, and privileged to add it to our recent HealthGrades rating that placed Peninsula Regional among the top five hospitals for heart care in Maryland.”
