OCEAN CITY- Roughly 100 youth girls’ youth lacrosse teams from all over the country have descended on Ocean City this weekend for the 2009 Beach Lax Festival, which got underway this morning with first round games.
Hosted by the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department in conjunction with the local Beach Lacrosse Club, the annual festival has grown by leaps and bounds over the years and this year will welcome a little shy of 100 of the top girls’ youth lacrosse programs from all over the east coast and beyond. Last year, 114 teams participated in Beach Lax Festival but the numbers were tempered somewhat this year by the annual Lax Splash festival in Baltimore, which is being played on the same weekend. Typically, Lax Splash is held the weekend before the Beach Lax Festival in Ocean City, but the way the dates fell this year, the events will be held simultaneously.
Lax Splash, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is played at several different venues in the lacrosse tradition-rich Baltimore area and features hundreds of teams and thousands of players from all over the country. The Beach Lacrosse Club will be well represented at Lax Splash with several boys’ and girls’ teams competing in different age brackets.
Meanwhile, back in Ocean City, the Beach Lax Festival is a girls’ only tournament featuring around 100 teams from around the region and the host club will also be well represented on the field. Most of the action will take place at Northside Park in Ocean City with games practically around the clock starting this morning and culminating with various championship games on Sunday. Throughout the weekend, Northside Park will become lacrosse central with games played on several fields along with food, drink, music and vendors.
The action resumes next weekend when Beach Lacrosse hosts a boys’ tournament with over 100 teams expected from all over the region. The boy’s tournament next weekend will be played at various venues in Berlin.
