BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team stayed on a roll this week, beating North Caroline, 37-34, on Tuesday for their second straight win.

The Seahawks have struggled all year for the most part, but they might be saving their best for last. Decatur beat visiting North Caroline on Tuesday night with a combination of timely shooting and a stingy defense. Kylie Nottingham scored 10 points and Leigh Anne Flounlacker added nine for the Seahawks, who improved to 5-14 on the season with the win.

While the 5-14 record doesn’t appear to be that great, it speaks volumes about how far the Seahawks have come late in the season. After starting the season 0-9, Decatur has played .500 ball over the last several weeks. Tuesday’s win over North Caroline was the second in a row for the Seahawks and the third of the last four.

After a pair of blowout losses to Bayside Conference powerhouses Pocomoke and Wicomico, each by the score of 45-15, the Seahawks have responded and have not folded up their tents. The latest run of good fortune started with a 43-13 win over Crisfield last Monday, followed by a 40-15 rout of county rival Snow Hill last Friday, in a game made up after snow caused its cancellation last Tuesday. On this Tuesday, Decatur continued the roll with the narrow 37-34 win over North Caroline.

The Seahawks have an opportunity to build on their late season success as they prepare for the state playoffs. Decatur played Crisfield on the road last night in another winnable game and will travel to Snow Hill next Tuesday for a rematch with the Eagles. They finish the regular season at home against Parkside on February 12.
