Mary Grace Griffin

BERLIN – Mary Grace Griffin, 86, formerly of Ocean Pines, died on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at the home of her daughter.

She was the wife of Carroll “Griff ” Griffin, who died in February and with whom she celebrated 61 years of marriage. Born in Stamford, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Leona Castellano Maffei.

Her marriage to Griff was a World War II romance. She corresponded with him during the war, married him when he was discharged from the Army and then moved to Baltimore.  The two were long-time residents of Dundalk, Md. and then retired to Ocean Pines.

A registered nurse, she trained during the war at Norwalk General Hospital and worked as a nurse throughout her life, most notably at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Church Home and Hospital in Baltimore.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Lee Griffin and her husband Milton Misogianes of West Chester, Pa.; two step-grandchildren, Christine and John Misogianes; and a brother, Robert Maffei of Fairfield, Conn.

A memorial service will be held at a future date. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.

Betsey Ingham Shockley

OCEAN CITY – Betsey Ingham Shockley, age 69, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008.

Born Feb. 11, 1939 in Ephrata, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Marietta Ingham. Her brother, James Ingham preceded her in death in 2001.

 She was a member of Atlantic United Methodist Church in Ocean City, an active member of the Women’s Martha’s Circle and the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society, Mystic Harbor Pinochle Club and Town and Country Garden Club in Salisbury. She worked for over 15 years as a secretary at various churches in Columbia, MD and in Salisbury. She also served as the secretary of AUMC Administrative Council. Most recently she worked for the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce and enjoyed servicing the community.

She was a devoted family member who truly enjoyed being around her family and many friends. She recently celebrated her 50th Anniversary with her husband Jim and her children on a western Carribean Cruise.

She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, James E. Shockley; a son, Chris Shockley and his wife Mary of Ocean City; two daughters, Michelle S. Bankert and her husband Brian of Ocean City and Claudine S. Schiller and her husband David of Silver Spring; seven grandchildren, Allison, Megan and Julia Shockley, Lindsey and Collin Bankert, and Alexis and Ann Schiller; a brother, Jerry Ingham and his wife Diane of Lancaster, Pa.; sister-in-law, Roberta "Bobbie" Ingham of Brownstown, Pa; many sister and brother in-laws; and and nieces and nephews.

Services were held. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Atlantic United Methodist Church, 105 4th Street, Ocean City, Md. 21842.

Ron E. Jones

OCEAN CITY – Ron E. Jones, age 65, died on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Maryland he was the son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Stranahan Jones. He is survived by his wife, Cresenthia T. Jones.

Jones had served in the United States Navy, he was a member of the American Legion Post #166 in Ocean City. He had worked for many years for Pan Am Airlines. He enjoyed family and friends, fishing and happy hour.

Along with his wife he is survived by a son, Michael Jones and his wife Linda; a daughter Mindy Jones; one sister, Joyce Spitz and her husband Jack; and one grandson, Erik Olsen.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post #166 in Ocean City. A reception will follow the service at the American Legion Hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Legion, Post #166, 2308 Philadelphia Ave., Ocean City, Md. 21842. Arrangements by the Burbage Funeral Home.

Linda Gail Elliott

BERLIN – Linda Gail Elliott, age 47, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born in Baltimore at St. Agnes Hospital, she was the daughter of Joan Loughrey Steele and her husband Sonny "Bunk’ Steele of Berlin and the late William Anthony Loughrey, Sr.

Elliott had been an office secretary and police communications operator for the Maryland State Police for 24 years. She was a member of the Boggs-Disharoon American Legion Post #123 Ladies Auxiliary for 22 years, Maryland Troopers Association, former member of Selbyville Lodge Order of the Elks Auxiliary. Elliott greatly enjoyed traveling.

Along with her mother and step-father, she is survived by her husband, Robert "Bobby" J. Elliott; a son, Robert "Robby" J. Elliott, II of Berlin; three brothers, William "Bill" Loughrey, Jr. and his wife Colleen of Berlin, Michael T. Loughrey of Phoenix, Ariz., and Steven C. Loughrey of Berlin; a step-brother, Jonathan E. Steele of San Diego, Calif.; a step-sister, Jamie R. Steele of Selbyville; three nephews, Steven Charles Loughrey, Guner William Loughrey, and Matthew Flurer; a niece, Brittany Flurer; a special great niece, Madalynne Mae Loughrey; there are numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is also survived by her devoted pet dogs, Magnum and Bailey, a pet cat "Miss Smith" and a late beloved pet Ruby. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Charles and Margaret Schamburg, and her father in-law, James S. Elliott.

Diane W. Brans

SELBYVILLE, Del. – Diane W. Brans, 65, of Selbyville, Del. and formally of Hockessin, Del. and Fenwick Island, Del., passed away on Wednesday Dec. 3, 2008 at her home, surrounded by her husband Theo and her sister Jean, after a long courageous battle with breast cancer.

Born in Wilmington, Del. on July 25, 1943 to the late Elizabeth and Charles Wooldridge, she was a graduate of Brandywine High School in 1961 and West Virginia Wesleylan College in 1965. She worked as a nursery school teacher at St. Michael’s School and Nursery for 23 years and as a sales associate at the former Strawbridge & Clothier store for 32 years, both in Wilmington.

She was an active member of St. Matthew’s By-The-Sea United Methodist Church in Fenwick Island, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women, the choir, the bell choir, and the quilters. Additionally, at St Matthew’s, she organized the monthly Sing Along at Atlantic Shores Rehabilitation and Health Center in Millsboro and was also involved in establishing the church’s Alanon program and organizing the yearly Red Bird Mission trips to Kentucky.

She enjoyed volunteering for Read-Aloud of Southern Delaware for 10 years, where she won an award this year for Outstanding Volunteer Leadership.  She was a member of the Fenwick Island Women’s Club where she was a member of one of the club’s shuffleboard teams, winning several titles.  She was also a member of PEO.

Diane was an inspiration to all who had the fortune to know her. She enjoyed cooking with her husband, especially using the fruits of her garden.  She also enjoyed going to the beach, fishing, playing games and watching the Phillies.  However, her greatest joy was her grandchildren, who will miss her tremendously, but will have the many great memories she created for them. 

She is survived by her loving husband Theo, her son Martin Brans and his wife Jessica of Allentown, PA, her daughter Ingrid Yerger and her husband Barry of Greenville, DE, her sister Jean Farris and her fiancé Jack Riddle of Newark, DE and her nephew David Harmon of Oakland, CA. She also will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Beau, Blaine, Hunter and Isabella, who were the lights of her life.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday Dec. 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew’s By-The-Sea United Methodist Church, 1000 Coastal Highway, Fenwick Island, Del.

Holmes “Scotty” Shew

OCEAN PINES – Holmes (Scotty) Shew, age 93, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008 at Catered Living of Ocean Pines from dementia.

Born in Baltimore he was the son of the late Bessie Patterson Shew. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hilda Gross Shew.

Shew retired from Western Electric in 1977 after forty two years of service. Shortly after retirement he and his wife moved to Ocean City. He was a big fan of the Colts, Ravens and the Orioles. He enjoyed playing cards especially pinochle.

He is survived by his son, Ronald H. Shew and his wife Patricia of Ocean Pines; two granddaughters, Jennifer Berry of Loganville, Ga. and Allison Shew of Fountain, Colo.; and four great grandchildren.

No formal services are planned at this time. Interment will be private.
Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Anthony Michael Altieri

WEST OCEAN CITY – Anthony Michael Altieri, age 75, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008 at his home.

Born in Waterbury, CT he was the son of the late Leonardo Altieri and Maria Campanaro Altieri.

Altieri was a graduate of Wilby High School and attended the University of Alabama and Central Connecticut University. He had worked for many years as an Industrial Arts Teacher in Waterbury, Conn. and retired to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1988. He was a United States Air Force veteran having served in the Korean War. He enjoyed woodworking and was a member of the Mason Dixon Wood Workers Association in Delmar, DE as well as a member of the VFW in Salisbury.

He is survived by his lifelong friend and companion, Thomas Messino of West Ocean City; a brother, Lawrence P. Altieri and his wife Alice of Torrington, Conn.; a sister, Mary Rinehart and her husband Bill of Pasadena, Texas; sister-in-law, Connie Altieri of Waterbury, Conn.; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, twin brother Dominic Altieri, Valentino Altieri, Nicholas Altieri, and Costanzo Altieri; and a sister, Ruth Mancini.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Pittsville Cemetery in Pittsville. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802.

BERLIN — On Dec. 3 2008, Norma (nee Brady) Hartman died.

She was the devoted wife of Robert S Hartman for 61 years, loving aunt of Deborah Campbell (nee Brady), Richard McDowell and many others and the devoted sister to Lorraine McDowell.
