BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s men’s varsity soccer team lost a heartbreaker last weekend, falling to visiting Aberdeen, 2-1, in double-overtime to bow out of the state Class 3A-East playoffs.
The Seahawks entered the post-season as the four-seed in the Class 3A-East tournament and earned a home date in the opening round against Aberdeen. However, Decatur’s appearance in the tournament was short-lived after Aberdeen scored a goal in the second overtime period to eliminate the Seahawks and advance in the post-season. Ryan Davis scored the lone goal for Decatur in the loss.
The loss in the first-round of the state playoffs continued a trend of early exits for the Seahawks in the post-season. Last year, Decatur upset Northeast, 2-1, in the first round in a game that came down to penalty kicks, before falling to top-seeded Bel Air in the region semifinals.
The loss last Friday to Aberdeen in the first round of the playoffs did little to tarnish what was another great season for the Seahawks. Decatur finished the season with a 7-4-2 record including a 4-3-1 mark in the Bayside Conference.
