BERLIN- An otherwise perfect Homecoming for the Stephen Decatur varsity football team last Friday was spoiled somewhat by a fourth-quarter comeback by visiting Queen Anne’s, who scored 19 unanswered fourth quarter points to steal the 33-21 win.
The two Bayside heavyweights slugged it out for three-plus quarters before the Lions capitalized on a handful of huge plays down the stretch to pull the come-from-behind win. Decatur scored first on a five-yard touchdown pass from Tim Donnelly to Andrew Brickey. The scored remained 7-0 in favor of Decatur for much of the first half before Queen Anne’s tied it at 7-7 on a nine-yard touchdown run near the end of the first half.
Decatur went back up, 14-7, in the third quarter on another touchdown pass from Donnelly to Brickey, this time for 50 yards. Once again, Queen Anne’s had the answer, tying the score at 14-14 going into the fourth quarter. With about eight minutes left in the game, the Seahawks took a 21-14 lead on a long 55-yard bomb from Donnelly to Paul Stortini, but that would be the end of the scoring for Decatur on the night.
On the ensuing kick-off, Decatur squib-kicked the ball to the Lions’ up men who scooped it up and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown to tie the score at 21-21. Decatur was driving on its next possession but stalled with a fourth and 14 situation. The Seahawks went for it and were stopped with about four minutes remaining.
Queen Anne’s took advantage of the big defensive stand and drove in for a go-ahead score on a 10-yard touchdown run to take the lead for the first time in the game at 27-21.
Still, there was plenty of time for the high-powered Seahawk offense to stop the bleeding and get back in the game and no one in the big Homecoming crowd was leaving. However, the Seahawks fumbled the kick-off with about 1:40 remaining on the clock and Queen Anne’s recovered. The Lions punched it in from there to extend the lead to 33-21, which is how the contest ended.
The loss dropped Decatur’s record to 3-2 on the season. The Seahawks look to rebound with a road game tonight against Parkside.
