Nellie T. Hales
SNOW HILL – Nellie T. Hales, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.
Born on June 4, 1916 in Cedar Town, Md.. she was the daughter of the late Thomas R. Twigg and Grace Chatham Twigg Taylor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carman Hales, on Jan. 9, 1992.
Hales had attended Whatcoat United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed worshiping. She was a member of the UMW under the direction of Betty Pruitt.
Loving to cook and being around people, she always enjoyed working at the bake sales and at the church dinners. She was a member of the Second Wind Group, under Ellen Hargis. She looked forward each month to going to lunches or just taking a pleasure trip with the group.
She had worked at the Pant Factory in Snow Hill, where she sewed on buttons until she reached the age to retire. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Snow Hill Fire Company. Whenever they had a fund-raiser or parade, she was always there with the girls. They were her second family, each making her feel special.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tom and Shirley Foxwell of Snow Hill; her sister Jeannette "Jay" T. Griffith of Salisbury; two step-granddaughters, Terri Lokey and Lisa White; and three special children, Nalan Lokey, Bobby and Amy White.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Burbage Funeral Home in Snow Hill where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Whatcoat Cemetery. In lieu of flowers

Maria Elena Roderick
BERLIN – Maria Elena Roderick, age 66, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. Born in Washington DC, she was the daughter of the late Earl A. Johnston and Alice Rebecca Dunn Johnston.
She is survived by her husband, Walter Ray Roderick; three sons, Walter R. Roderick, Jr. and his wife Jeanne of Blue Ridge, Ga., Edward A. Roderick and his wife Tandy of Garland, Texas and Brett Roderick and his wife India of Berlin; three daughters, Deniece Roderick of Martinsburg, W.Va., Joan Marie McDevitt and her husband Rodney Donald of Winchester, Va. and Maria E. "Bunny" Orlowski and her husband Mike of Leesburg, Va.; 19 grandchildren; seven great grand children; three brothers, Christopher Martin Johnston of Clinton, Md., Earl "Skip" Johnston of Ocean City and Steve Johnston of Deal, Md.; and there are several nieces and nephews.
Roderick was a retired school bus driver with Prince George County, Md. She loved fishing, gardening and her family.
A memorial service was held at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. Interment will be private in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Berlin Volunteer Fire Company, 214 N. Main St., Berlin, Md. 21811.
Gene Pete Chufar
OCEAN PINES – Gene Pete Chufar, age 77, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.
Born in Canton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Pete Chufar and Eula Stephens Chufar.
Chufar was a US Air Force Veteran. He had worked for many years as Director of Training for the IRS.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jane Chufar; a daughter, Debra Chufar Fountain and her husband Joseph; a son, Eric Glenn Chufar; and five grandchildren, Steven Fountain, Caroline Fountain, Brent Fountain, Abigail Chufar, Hailey Chufar. He is also survived by many cousins and friends.
Services were held. The Rev. Thomas McKelvey officiated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Church of Ocean Pines Memorial Fund, 11227 Racetrack Rd., Ocean Pines, Md. 21811 or to the American Heart Association, PO Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216. Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.
Evelyn Marie Criswell
OCEAN CITY – Evelyn Marie Criswell, age 86, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
Born in Baltimore she was the daughter of the late John Burns and Lottie Orndoff Burns. She was preceded in death by her husband E. Nelson Criswell, Sr. in 1998.
She is survived by her son, Edward N. Criswell, Jr. of Ocean City; two grandchildren, Kimberleigh Criswell and Gary Criswell and his wife Carrie; two great grandchildren, Nelson and Grayson Criswell all of White Marsh; three sisters, Catherine Townsend of Glen Burnie, Gloria Sollers, and Jackie Simms both of Florida; three nieces, Marlene Chiebe, Patricia Mezzapella and Donna Simms; two nephews, Michael McElaney and David Simms; one great nephew Eddie Chiebe.
Services were held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Gerri Harrison, 337 Winter Quarters Dr., Pocomoke City, Md. 21851. Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.
Rudolph “Rudy” Steen, Jr.
BERLIN – Rudolph “Rudy” Steen, Jr., 65, formerly of Glen Burnie, Md., died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008 at home.
Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Rudolph Sr. and Mildred Zamostny Steen. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine J. Steen of Berlin; a son, Randy P. Steen of Glen Burnie; a daughter, Kelly A. Thurfield of Glen Burnie; two brothers; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his stepson, Thomas W. Sawyer, in 2007.
Steen retired as a police officer after 28 years with the Anne Arundel County Police Department. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Blue Knights of Maryland, the Ocean City American Legion and the Salisbury Moose Lodge.
A memorial service will be held on Oct. 11, 2008 at 4 pm. at the American Legion Post 166, 24th St. & Coastal Hwy., Ocean City, Md.

Christina J. Miller
SELBYVILLE – Christina J. Miller, 56, formerly of Greenbelt, Md., died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008 at home.
Born in Columbus, Oh., she was the daughter of the late Willie and Anna Schneider. She is survived by her husband, Joseph M. Miller; a stepson, Joseph E. Miller; and a stepdaughter, Joanne Keefe, both of Albuquerque, N.M.
Miller was a homemaker and a member of the Red Hats and the Greenbelt Ladies Aux. and the American Legion Post #136.
