BERLIN- The Berlin Dolphins of the Salvation Army Youth Football League rolled in their home opener last week, trouncing the visiting Chincoteague Colts, 47-0, to improve to 1-1 on the young season.

After falling to rival Salisbury in the season opener on the road, the Berlin Dolphins came out strong against Chincoteague in the home opener at Buckingham Elementary last week, scoring early and often and stopping the Colts from getting anything going on offense. Coach Earnest Shockley and his staff had the Dolphin offense firing on all cylinders with scoring coming from several sources up and down the roster.

Berlin’s James Mapp scored three touchdowns and was the game’s leading scorer. Dolphin quarterback Colin Macomber threw a touchdown pass to Jonathon Hastings, while Nick Barack, Jake Lathroum and Henry Hastings each had touchdown runs.

Meanwhile, the Berlin Dolphins Cadet team, made up of player ages 7-10, lost their home opener to the Salisbury Terps, 20-7, in a game also played at Buckingham Elementary last weekend, although the final score is not really indicative of just how close the game really was. Salisbury led the game 7-0 late in the first half in what was a tight defensive game before a penalty on Berlin right before halftime set up another score and a 14-0 lead at the intermission.

Berlin came out fired up in the second half and went on a long offensive drive capped of by a 55-yard touchdown run by Billy Wheatley to make it 14-7 in the third quarter. Both defenses dominated the rest of the way as neither team was able to get much going on offense. Finally, Salisbury scored a late touchdown with under four minutes left in the game on a 30-yard touchdown run to seal the victory, although it was much closer than the 20-7 score indicated.

Both Berlin Dolphin teams play in the local “Red Shield” Salvation Army Youth Football League. The teams are based on ages and weight restrictions. For example, the Berlin Dolphin Cadets features players ages 7-10 with a maximum weight of 120 lbs. and Berlin Dolphin Juniors includes players ages 11-13 with a maximum weight of 150 lbs.

The Junior Dolphins will attempt to make it two in a row with a game against the Bulldogs at the Salvation Army Field in Salisbury under the lights tomorrow night at 7:45 p.m. Meanwhile, the Cadet Dolphins will try to right the ship against the Warriors in Salisbury tomorrow at 10 a.m.
