Sammy Golf Tourney, Fundraiser Set for August 1

OCEAN CITY- The Sammy Wilkinson Memorial Golf Tournament, an annual fundraiser held in honor of a young Ocean City boy who tragically died after falling through the ice at Northside Park several years ago, is set for August 1 at the Newport Bay course of the Ocean City Golf Club in South Point.

Very many positive things have come out of Sammy’s tragic death several years ago including the creation of a foundation in his name which is helping underprivileged children in poverty-stricken areas all over the world share enjoy youth sports as much as he did.

The Sammy Wilkinson Memorial Foundation was created as part of the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS) worldwide initiative to lend a hand to countries around the world that are unable to provide quality sports programs for children. All funds raised through the Sammy Wilkinson Memorial fund are earmarked for the Game On! Youth Sports initiative and the Global Gear Drive program.

Both of these programs were created by the National Alliance for Youth Sports to not only provide developing countries with sporting equipment, apparel, and youth sports programs, but also to promote adoption of a healthy lifestyle and to steer children away from the negative behaviors of crime, violence and drug abuse.

The Sammy Wilkinson Memorial Golf Tournament slated for August 1 is just one of many fundraising events throughout the year and one of the most popular. It is paired with the annual “Jam for Sam” benefit held later in the evening on August 1 at Seacrets, with all the proceeds going to the foundation.

The golf tournament costs $600 per foursome and includes four tickets to the Jam for Sam benefit along with various gifts and prizes for the golfers. It will be played in a scramble format with prizes for the longest drive, closest to the pin, best outfit and oldest set of golf clubs.

Following the action on the course, participating golfers will head to Seacrets for the annual Jam for Sam benefit, featuring live local musicians, food, discounted drink prices, door prizes and silent auction items. Sam’s father, Bob Wilkinson, and his uncle, Darren Engh, make up the popular acoustic duo Opposite Directions.
