BERLIN- The undefeated Stephen Decatur girls’ varsity lacrosse team rolled to its third straight Bayside Conference championship on Tuesday, routing north division champion Kent Island, 13-5, to improve to 13-0 as the state regional playoffs begin.
Something had to give when the Seahawks traveled to Washington College on Tuesday to face the Buccaneers in the conference title game. Decatur was unbeaten and Kent Island had just one loss, its only defeat coming at the hands of the Seahawks back on April 10 by a score of 13-8.
On Tuesday, the Seahawks left nothing to chance, jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead driven by a four-goal outburst by Olivia Turner. Kent Island scrapped its way back into the game and cut the lead to 6-3 late in the first half, but the Seahawks scored two goals late in the first to extend the lead to 8-3 at the half.
Kent Island scored early in the third quarter to cut the lead to 8-4, but that was as close as the Buccaneers would get. Decatur closed out the contest with a 5-1 run the rest of the way to claim its third conference title in three years. Turner finished with four goals while Leighanne Flounlacker added three and Nicole Dougan and Taylor Blazer pitched in two each.
The undefeated Seahawks garnered the top seed in the state Class 3A-2A East Region playoffs and will face eight-seeded Easton in the first round at home tonight. Decatur will remain at home as long as they continue to win in the playoffs and will likely face the winner of the Northern (5) versus Annapolis (4) game next week.
Last year, the Seahawks beat Kent Island to win the 3A-2A East Region title to reach the state’s Final Four for the second year in a row. However, Decatur lost to North Harford in the state semifinals for its only loss of the year and its only loss in the last two years.
