Mallards Rebound with Win Over Easton

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s men’s varsity lacrosse team wasted no time rebounding from last Friday’s loss to Decatur, thrashing visiting Easton, 13-5, on Monday to get back in the win column.

Worcester led 2-0 after the first quarter in a tight, well-played game by both teams. In the second quarter, Worcester keeper Christian Coates hit Justin Butler streaking toward the Easton goal with a perfect outlet pass and Butler converted the opportunity for a 3-0 lead.

Shortly after that, Worcester’s Max DiFilippo scored on a nice move from behind the Easton goal to extend the lead to 4-0. Easton finally got on the board with 2:46 remaining in the third with a goal in an unsettled situation. Coates went out to clear a ground ball, but the Easton player scooped the ball and fired a shot past Worcester defender Chris Fisher, who had jumped in the goal in Coates’ absence.

Worcester’s Christian Payne extended the lead to 6-1 with goal just before the first half expired, but Easton would make a brief run early in the third to get back in the game. The Warriors scored three quick goals to start the third quarter, cutting the Mallards’ lead to 6-4. Worcester’s Brad Harris stopped the bleeding with a nice goal on the crease to push the lead back to 7-4, which was how the third quarter would end.

In the fourth quarter, Justin Butler scored early on a nice feed from DiFilippo to push the lead to 8-4, but Easton answered a minute later to cut the lead to 8-5. That was as close as the Warriors would get, however. The DiFilippo-to-Butler combo connected again to extend the lead to 9-5. Harris then fed Payne for another goal with just over seven minutes left in the game to make it 10-5.

Butler hit Will Regan with a nice assist and Regan converted the goal to make it 11-5. Worcester tacked on two more late goals to finish off the Warriors, 13-5.
