Wastewater treatment plant bid awarded

ASSATEAGUE- Superintendent Scott J. Bentley announced today that the N-Powell Company, Inc. of Weirton, West Virginia, has been awarded the contract to design and upgrade the waste water treatment plant for Assateague Island National Seashore.

“Declining water quality trends in the coastal bays is the number one resource management concern facing Assateague Island National Seashore

and the surrounding coastal bays,” said Bentley. “We invest a significant amount of time and resources into strategies to improve and protect the water quality of the coastal bays”.

The upgrades and modifications remove the point source discharge from the Sinepuxent Bay and reduce the effluent nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations through the application of a new membrane filtration system.  Reducing nitrogen loading from point source discharges is a crucial step in achieving water quality improvements, and is a shared goal of the National Park Service, the State of Maryland, the Maryland Coastal Bay Program and the EPA.

The proposed discharge location will be into an existing wetland located on adjacent state of Maryland-owned property managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MDNR). Wetland discharge provides the opportunity for plant uptake, soil adsorption, transformation, and sequestration of nutrients, thereby reducing the potential that shallow aquifers will become enriched and contribute nutrients indirectly through groundwater discharge.

Successful completion of the proposed project will make a significant contribution towards regional efforts to reduce nutrient loads entering the

Coastal Bays.   The National Park Service provided over $1 million dollars in funding for this project to ensure Assateague Island National Seashore remains an environmental leader in the stewardship of the Maryland and Virginia coastal bays.

New MSSA Associate Executive Director

OCEAN CITY- The Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen’s Association (MSSA) is pleased to announce Dave Smith as the new Associate Executive Director.

Smith hails from Montana where he received his B.A. in Political Science from The University of Montana and has been involved in state and federal politics for several years.

In 2005, Smith worked as a legislative intern for the law firm of Browning, Kaleczyc, Berry and Hoven during the Montana Legislative Session where he fell in love with politics. Following his dream he decided to load up the car and head to Washington, I know what you are thinking, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.”

While he didn’t arrive as a Senator, he quickly worked his way through the trenches of Capitol Hill starting as a legislative intern for Senator Burns, moving onto staff assistant for the Senate Chief Counsel for Employment and most recently with U.S. Senator Jon Tester as Executive Aide to the Chief of Staff. While his career in D.C. was wonderful, he and his wife decided it was time to start a family and look for a career closer to home in Towson.

“I am very excited to start working with Steve, Rich and the rest of the board in continuing MSSA’s history of hard work and passion for Maryland’s sport fishermen,” he said “I believe we are a valuable asset not only to the recreational boaters, sport fishermen, but to the state of Maryland and the environment.”

Chamber to Close WOC Postal Service

OCEAN CITY- After much careful consideration and analysis, the Ocean City Chamber Board of Director’s has had to make the difficult decision to close the contract postal unit, located in the Chamber Visitor’s Center.

The Board has evaluated the figures for several months and the cost to operate this unit is not being covered by the revenue, primarily due to staffing. Chamber officials said this is a wonderful service to the community, which is why the decision was so difficult. However, the U.S. Post Office is soliciting bids for a new contract located in West Ocean City. This would be an ideal situation for a retail or service business to help bring in additional customers.

The hope is that there will be no break in service to West Ocean City- by the time the Chamber closes on May 1, 2008, the new CPU will be functioning at another West O.C. location.

As it winds down, the Chamber Post Office will be open from Monday through Friday only until May 1, 2008
