BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s men’s varsity wrestling team made a strong showing at the Arundel Holiday Tournament last weekend, finishing in fourth place as a team and collecting a handful of individual titles along the way.
The Seahawks came in fourth as team out of a field of some of the top high school wrestling programs in the state at the Arundel Holiday Tournament last weekend. It was the second strong finish for Decatur in a major tournament this year as the Seahawks came in second in its own War on the Shore tourney in early December.
As individuals, the Seahawks won two championships and collected two second-place finishes, two fourth-place finishes, a fifth and three sixth-place finishes out of the 14 weight classes. Vinny Artrip won the title in the 119-pound class, beating Mike Micklos of Curley, John Ambrosich of Fallston and Andrew Lewis on host Arundel in the championship match.
Mark Bargar won Decatur’s other individual title, sweeping three matches to take the championship in the 171-pound class. Bargar knocked off Fallston’s Dimitir Kakoullis in the first-round, Arundel’s Josh Crouse in the second round and Danny Smith of Loyola in the championship match.
In other weight divisions, Decatur’s Danny Banks took second place in the 130-pound class, winning two matches before falling in the finals. Likewise, Danny Miller finished second in the 189-pound weight class after winning two matches to reach the championship round. Sean McGarry finished fourth in the 125-pound class, while James Reid finished fourth in the 275-pound class.
Dylan Drew finished fifth in the 215-pound class, while Josh Mitchell (140), Josh Bargar (145) and Bryce Smith (160) each finished in sixth place in their respective weight classes. Other Decatur participants included Mark Brady (103), Corey Tobias (112), Bernie McGarry (135), and Danny Kominos (152).
