Mallards Battle to 1-1 Tie

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity field hockey team played to a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods against old rival Saints Peter and Paul on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mallards scored first on a goal by Elizabeth Hudson and led at the half, 1-0. However, Saints Peter and Paul scored the equalizer just three minutes into the second half to tie the score at 1-1, which is how the contest would end. Both teams had plenty of opportunities to score during the rest of the second half, but both were repelled as they tried to take the lead in the contest.

Worcester made a big push with 12 minutes left in the game, but could not punch in the equalizer. The Sabres responded on their offensive end, pressuring the Worcester goal down the stretch but could not break the tie and the scored remained 1-1 at the end of regulation.

In the first 10-minute overtime period, the Sabres hammered at the Worcester goal with several opportunities, but the Mallard goalkeeper made several point blank saves including a big kick save at the 3:54 mark. In the second 10-minute overtime period, each team had opportunities to score but could not cash in and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The Mallards face Calverton at home this afternoon.
