OCEAN CITY – After spending about six weeks in Worcester County Jail, a local woman accused of first-degree murder has been released and is heading home.
Early this afternoon in Ocean City District Court, the State’s Attorney’s Office dropped the charges against Christy Freeman, 37, of Ocean City.
The details of why the charges were not prosecuted are not clear at this point, but State’s Attorney Joel Todd has a press conference scheduled for tomorrow morning to formally announce that charges have been dropped.
Freeman was the subject of a national media frenzy after police discovered four fetal remains in her Sunset Drive house in late July. The investigation in recent weeks came to a standstill while the Maryland Medical Examiner’s Office conducted autopsies and other probes of the fetuses.
When contacted earlier this week by The Dispatch News Editor Shawn Soper, the Medical Examiner’s Office reported the cause of death was undetermined.
Freeman has reportedly been freed from prison and is expected to arrive home sometime today.
Full details of the story will be available on The Dispatch’s website tomorrow and Friday morning. Complete coverage will be in Friday’s issue of The Dispatch, which be found at more than 200 locations on the Delmarva peninsula.
