25th St. Patrick’s Soccer Tourney Continues

3/08/2013 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

OCEAN CITY- The Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department’s 25th Annual St. Patrick’s Indoor Soccer Tournament continues this week with the third weekend of the four-weekend event.

Roughly 150 teams and hundreds of players from all over the mid-Atlantic region have been converging on the resort area the last two weekends for the annual St. Patrick’s Indoor Soccer Tournament and the event continues this week with two more divisions to be decided. From modest beginnings 25 years ago, the annual tournament has grown by leaps and bounds over the years and is now one of the largest events of its kind. The 2013 tournament is hosting over 150 teams competing in 12 divisions over four weekends starting in late February.

The tournament got started on the weekend of February 22-24 with the under-18 boys and girls divisions. For the record, in the boys’ under-18 division, the Baltimore Spurs beat the Red Storm in the championship game to win the 2013 title, while Rommel’s Ace out of Salisbury beat Storm to win the girls’ under-18 division this year.

Last weekend, the boys’ and girls’ under-10 and under-14 tournaments were held. This weekend, the boys’ and girls under-12 and under-16 tournaments take center stage at host Northside Park with games held practically around the clock culminating in championship games on Sunday. The 2013 event concludes next weekend with the men’s and women’s adult tournaments, which are typically the highlight of the four-weekend event each February and March.
