BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestlers turned in a strong performance at the Bayside Conference championships last weekend, finishing second overall as a team and collecting a bunch of top finishes in individual weight classes.

The Seahawks rode a solid run of first-place finishes in the middle weight classes to finish with 196 total team points, second only to Kent Island, which won the Bayside tournament with 294 team points. Queen Anne’s was third with 171 total team points.

The Decatur wrestlers placed in nearly every weight class including three first-place finishes. At 145, Alex Schiffer beat Queen Anne’s Michael Adams, Corey Palmer of Wicomico, Montana Walton of North Caroline and Kent Island’s Dmitry Callas to win the championship.

In the 152-pound weight class, Decatur’s Kaelan Patterson beat David Ainsworth of Snow Hill, Kyle Barga of Mardela and Wade Bishop of North Caroline to win the title in that division. Andrew Borradaile also collected a first-place finish, beating Chris Musterman of Queen Anne’s, Kevin Parker of St. Michael’s, and Justin Peacock of Kent County to take the title in the 150-pound class.

Decatur’s Ryan Kail won two matches to reach the finals in the 285-pound class before falling in the championship to finish second. Adam Bargar split his first two matches then came back to win his final two to take third place in the 195-pound class. The same scenario played out for T.J. Scafone at 106, who finished third in the weight class. Joseph Rodriguez took fifth at 120, Jared King was fifth at 170, Nate Rosenblatt was sixth at 113 and Ethan Eibl was sixth at 220.

Seven Seahawks will compete this weekend in the state championship meet. Kail is seeded first at 285, Bargar is seeded second at 195, Borradaile is seeded second at 160, Rosenblatt is seeded second at 113, Patterson is seeded third at 152, Scafone is seeded seventh at 106 and Schiffer is seeded seventh at 145.
