Rosenblatt, Kail Take Titles at War on Shore

12/14/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team had a strong performance at its own 11th annual War on the Shore tournament last weekend, collecting two titles and turning in one of its best finishes as a team in recent years.

The War on the Shore, hosted by Decatur for the last 11 years, features some of the best high school wrestling programs in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. each year and this year was no different. The field of 31 teams this year was as impressive as ever with some of the top prep programs in the region represented. The tournament was held last Friday and Saturday at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center.

The top Maryland teams in the field included Archbishop Curley, Archbishop Spalding, Arundel, Bishop McNamara, Broadneck, Centennial, Charles E. Smith, DeMatha, Glenelg, Huntingtown, La Plata, Mount St. Joseph, Severna Park, St. Mary’s Ryken, Thomas Stone, Wilde Lake and, of course, host Stephen Decatur.

Representing Delaware in the field will be Caravel Academy, Middletown, Salesianum, Sussex Central and Sussex Tech. Virginia will also be well represented with five teams including Grassfield, Great Bridge, Hanover, Hickory and Northampton. Washington D.C.’s Gonzaga will also participate, as will Wheeling Park and Musselman from West Virginia.

The Decatur varsity team turned in one of its strongest performances in recent years, finishing 11th overall out of the field of 31 teams. The Seahawks also won two individual championships, with Nate Rosenblatt taking the title in the 113-pound class and Ryan Kail winning the title in the 285-pound class. Andrew Borradaile also placed, taking 8th in the 160-pound class.

Rosenblatt won two early round matches, then beat Sussex Central’s Christian Green in the semifinals to reach the championship match. Rosenblatt then beat Wheeling Park’s Dallas Baciak in the championship with a 4-2 decision. Kail swept three matches, beating Andrew Hanline of Great Bridge, Dalonte Holland of Huntingtown to reach the title match. In the championship, Kail beat Sean Twiggs of Glenelg.
