Second-Seeded Seahawks Knocked Out of States

11/09/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity soccer team closed out another great run with a 6-2 loss to visiting Atholton last Friday in the state Class 3A-East regional semifinals.

The Seahawks went 10-1-1 during the regular season, their only loss coming to rival Parkside, 3-1, back on October 2. Decatur entered the state 3A-East regional as the number-two seed and garnered a first-round bye. In its first match in the regional tournament, the Seahawks beat Annapolis, 3-1, last Thursday to advance.

Because of postponements and delays in the wake of Hurricane Sandy last week, the state playoffs were expedited in order to get back on schedule and the Seahawks had to come back to play Atholton at home the very next day. The Decatur girls fell to Atholton, 6-2, to close out what was otherwise a highly successful season.

After the October 2 loss to Parkside, the Seahawks won their last five regular season games by a combined 27-5, never allowing more than one goal per game while averaging over five goals per game. Against Atholton last Friday, however, the Seahawks ran out of gas and fell, 6-2, to end the season at 10-1-2.
