Seahawks Fall to North Caroline, 24-12

10/26/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team surrendered 17 unanswered points to North Caroline on a rare Thursday game last week and fell to the Bulldogs, 24-14, to fall to 4-4 on the season.

Decatur entered the game with North Caroline last Thursday with state playoff aspirations still intact although the Seahawks remained a long shot to advance to the Class 3A-East region post-season. After relinquishing a lead and falling to North Caroline last Thursday, the post-season goal is now on life support.

North Caroline scored first on an interception returned 39 yards for a touchdown and an early 7-0 lead. The Seahawks responded on their very next possession on a four-yard TD run by Andrew Borradaile, but the extra point attempt failed and Decatur trailed 7-6, which is how the first half would end.

In the third quarter, Decatur had several opportunities to get the offense rolling, but dropped passes and poorly time penalties kept the Seahawks from making much progress. Decatur finally broke through with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter when Collin Macomber ran it in himself from 12 yards out to put the Seahawks ahead, 12-7.

In the fourth quarter, North Caroline blocked a punt deep in the Decatur end and recovered the ball on the 12-yard-line. The North Caroline quarterback then ran it in from 12 yards out to put the Bulldogs ahead, 15-12.

On the next Decatur possession, North Caroline picked off a Seahawk pass attempt and later converted it into points with a 15-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 22-12. Trailing by 10 late in the game, Decatur attempted a last gasp at a comeback, but North Caroline sacked Macomber in the end zone with just 49 seconds remaining to close out the 24-12 win.

With the loss, Decatur fell to 4-4 on the season with just two games remaining. The Seahawks face Wicomico tonight at home, the finish the season with another home game next Friday against Snow Hill in the traditional finale between the two Worcester County rivals.
