8th Sam Henry Tourney a Huge Success

8/17/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- The 8th Annual Samuel S. Henry, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament last week was once again a huge success with thousands raised for the Greater Berlin Minority Scholarship program, which provides higher education opportunities to youth in the area.

Nearly 60 golfers competed in the annual tournament last week at the Man O’ War course at Glenriddle. The annual tournament raises funds each year for the Greater Berlin Minority Scholarship Committee, founded in 1989, for scholarships for students at Stephen Decatur High School. In each of the last 23 years, the committee has been able to provide at least five students with $1,000 scholarships to help continue their education.

Recipients have used the scholarships to advance their educations at prestigious colleges and universities such as Hampton, Virginia Tech, Duke, Towson, Salisbury, University of Maryland-College Park, UMBC, UMES, College of Notre Dame and Valdosta, just to name a few. For the record, the team of Donnie Berkey, David Taylor, Bob Gilmore and Joe Rhodes took first-place net, while Ron Rickards, Lou Taylor, Dan Parker and Mike Redner took first-place gross.

Second-place net went to Matt Sliwa, Bob Sliwa, Jason Priddy and Dennis Dare. Third-place net went to Devin Clarke, Jerry Clarke, Tres Hardesty and Wes Taylor. The women’s closest-to-the-pin winners were Jackie Lewis and Christy Powell. The men’s closest-to-the-pin winners were Mikey O’Connor, Jeff Donahue and Andrew Schumann. Dan Parker was the long-drive winner and the best dressed team award went to Kim Hudson, Karen Barrett, Jackie Lewis and Christy Powell.
