Salisbury Teen Heading to Olympic Trials

6/22/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

SALISBURY- A local swimmer will get a shot at a trip to London for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games later this summer when she competes in the U.S.A. Team Trials in Omaha, Nebraska next week.

Alice Treuth, 15, of Salisbury, earlier this month turned in a qualifying time in her signature event, the 200-LC Meter Backstroke, to earn a shot at a spot on the U.S. Olympic team preparing for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London later this summer. Treuth, a rising sophomore at James M. Bennett High in Salisbury, qualified for the U.S.A. Swimming team trials starting on Monday in Omaha.

Treuth turned in the Olympic Trials time at a qualifying event at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, which produced Maryland native Michael Phelps. Treuth, who has been training in two sessions totaling around five hours a day for the Olympic trials, trains with the Coastal Aquatics Swim Team in Salisbury under the direction of Head Coach Becca Agoglia, a swimming coach for 20 years and a member of the Salisbury University Hall of Fame.

Treuth’s qualifying time of 2:17.79 puts her near the middle of the pack among the top 200-meter backstroke swimmers from all over the country heading to Omaha for the Olympic trials next week. However, in high charged competitive swimming, just fractions of seconds separate the top of the field and the bottom.
