Seahawks Finish Second in Regionals, Prep for States

3/07/2008 | By News Editor, Shawn J. Soper

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's varsity wrestling team stayed on a roll last weekend, finishing second in the state Class 4A-3A regional tournament with two individual wrestlers winning regional titles in their respective weight classes.

Decatur finished with 102 total team points to come in second behind Old Mill, which finished the regionals with 134 points. The Seahawks beat Old Mill in the dual meet regional championship three weeks ago on their way to a first-ever state championship.

Two Decatur wrestlers- Skylar Snead and Danny Miller- won individual regional championships last weekend. Snead beat Kevin Eckart of Howard in his first match, Niko Maranto of Chesapeake in his second match and Jordan Hernandez of Arundel in the title match. Miller followed a similar path on his way to a championship, beating Patrick Carey of North County in his opener, Ian Graham of South River in his second match and Ethan Brown of Old Mill in his title bout.

Otherwise, the Seahawks placed in several other weight divisions during the regional tournament. At 103, Devin Bataille reached the title round before falling to Kevin Beck of Atholton to come in second. In the 112 division, Sean McGarry lost his first match but won his next two to finish third in the weight class. James Reid, wrestling at 275, lost his first match, won two in the middle and then lost another to finish fourth in the weight class. Danny Banks finished fifth at 130, while Corey Tobias finished sixth at 112.

Based largely on their strong showing in the regionals last weekend, several Seahawks advanced to the state championship meet this weekend at old Cole Field House in College Park. Bataille will be the number two-seed from the east in the 103 division and will face Darian Allen of Milford Mill in the first round. Sean McGarry will be the number three-seed in the east at 125 and will face Anthony Vito of Winston Churchill in his opening match.

Snead is the one seed from the east in the 135-pound division and will face Chase Ursiti of LaPlata in the first round. Miller is also a one seed from the east and will face Michael Spriggs of Charles Flowers High in his opening match of his title defense. Miller won the state championship last year. Finally, Reid will be the number four seed in the 285-pound class and will face Terrence Stephens of Quince Orchard in his opener.
