Worcester Girls Fall to Sabres, 2-0

10/12/2007 | By News Editor, Shawn J. Soper

BERLIN- Despite a valiant effort by Worcester Prep girls' soccer goalie Marissa Grimes, the Mallards fell to visiting Saints Peter and Paul, 2-0, on Tuesday in a tough home loss.

Grimes and the Mallard defense were sensational for most of the game, shutting out the Sabres for all but a critical three-minute stretch in the second half. The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half and the chess match continued early in the second half before Saints Peter and Paul broke through.

The Sabres got a great opportunity at the 23:30 mark in the second half, but a diving Grimes knocked the shot away at the last second. The Sabres scored on the ensuing corner kick at 23:18 and added a second goal just over three minutes later at 20:01 to take a 2-0 lead, which held up the rest of the way.

Worcester made several runs late in the game but could not break through. Despite the 2-0 loss, Grimes was awesome in goal, collecting 17 saves. The loss dropped the Mallards season record to 3-5. They play St. Paul's School for Girls on the road tomorrow.
