Big Run by Indians Dooms Seahawks

1/25/2013 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- A couple of big scoring spurts by Wicomico High doomed Decatur’s boys’ varsity basketball team to a 76-48 loss to the Indians at home on Tuesday.

After Decatur fell behind early, 7-4, in the first quarter on Tuesday, Jesse Engle tied the score at 7-7 with a long three-pointer at the 4:25 mark. Wicomico responded with an immediate three-pointer of its own to push the lead back to 10-7. Collin Gaynor pulled the Seahawks to within two points with a long jumper with 1:20 remaining in the first, but Wicomico again had the answer and the period ended with the Indians holding a 17-13 lead.

In the second quarter, Decatur’s P.J. Copes made a nice inside pass to Cameron Gaynor, who converted the lay-up to pull the Seahawks to within two at 17-15. On Decatur’s next possession, Engle connected on a three-pointer to give the Seahawks an 18-17 lead, but that was as close as the game would get. Wicomico then went on a 12-0 run to break the game open as Decatur had trouble getting shots to drop.

A Wicomico steal and fast-break lay-up put the Indians ahead, 29-18, before Tyler Hunter scored for Decatur to stop the bleeding. Collin Gaynor’s lay-up cut the lead to 29-20 with under two minutes remaining in the second quarter, but WiHi added a few late baskets and took a 34-22 lead into intermission.

Decatur hung around for a while in the third quarter, but Wicomico eventually pulled away. A three-pointer by Dimir Andrews cut the Indians lead to 36-26 with around five minutes to go in the third, and a layup by Copes about halfway through the period cut the lead to 12 again at 40-28, but Wicomico went on another big run late in the third to extend the lead to 54-33.

Both teams swapped baskets in a fairly close fourth quarter, but Decatur could not chip away at the lead as Wicomico continued to pull away for the 74-48 win. Engle led Decatur with 13 points, while Hunter pitched in 11.
