OCEAN CITY- Before Hurricane Sandy started arriving in the resort area last weekend, the 20th Annual Seaside 10 and associated 5K were held in Ocean City with hundreds of runners participating.
Over 500 runners competed in the annual events last Saturday with 260 in the 10-mile race and another 284 in the 5K race. The Seaside 10 started at the Inlet parking lot and continued north on the Boardwalk to 22nd Street before heading up Baltimore Ave. From there, the course continued up Coastal Highway to the turnaround point at 68th Street before following the same route back to the finish at the Inlet.
The 5K race also started and finished at the Inlet parking lot and was run entirely on the Boardwalk heading north to a turnaround at 16th Street and back down the Boardwalk to the finish line. As usual, the Seaside 10 and 5K race events had a Halloween theme and many of the competitors were dressed in costume. The event concluded with an awards ceremony at the Inlet following the races.
For the record, Enos Benbow of Georgetown, Del. was the winner in the Seaside 10, finishing in 58:57. Top local finishers included Nathan Croyle, Salisbury, 14th; Diane Walsh, Ocean Pines, 15th; Corrine Banks, Ocean City, 21st; Lauren Brueckner, Ocean City, 30th; Beth Beley-Smith, Berlin, 33rd; Matt Morrison, Ocean City, 44th; Charlene Creese, Salisbury, 45th; and Kristin Pike, Ocean City, 55th.
For the 5K race, Shane Martz of Mechanicsville, Md. finished first in 19:38. Top local finishers in the 5K race included Noah McAleer, Dan Winters, Thomas Scafone, Matt Keller, Lindsey Buckman, Mike Hitch, Ashley Diehl and Brigit Taylor.
