Decatur Girls Stay on a Big Roll

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity soccer team stayed on a big roll this week, sweeping three games including a 3-1 win over Parkside on Tuesday to improve to 9-1-1 on the season.

The Seahawks have now won four straight after suffering their first loss of the season to Parkside back on October 2. On Tuesday, Decatur avenged that loss with a 3-1 win over the Rams. Tori Whigham got Decatur on the board just 10 minutes into the contest for an early 1-0 lead, but most of the first half was spent in Parkside’s offensive end of the field.

Just two minutes into the second half, Brittney Calandra scored on a header to stake Decatur to a 2-0 lead with a lot of soccer yet to play. Parkside cut into the Decatur lead with a goal just minutes later, but Calandra scored her second goal of the game, this time off a rebound on a shot by Whigham to make it 3-1, which is how the game would end.

The win over Parkside avenged the Seahawks’ only loss on the season on October 2 and came just one day after a 9-1 win over Kent Island on Monday. The Buccaneers scored first on Monday for an early 1-0 lead when Decatur came out admittedly flat, according the Coach Misty Bunting. However, the Seahawks took a 3-1 lead into intermission and came out firing in the second half to cruise to the 9-1 win.

Whigham led the Seahawks with three goals and an assist, while Calandra also scored a hat trick. Petito had one goal and two assists, while Alex Pinto and Rebecca Haskell each scored single goals. Keeper Ashley DePaul had 15 saves against Kent Island.

Against Bennett last Friday, Decatur led 1-0 at halftime, but the Clippers tied the game at 1-1 early in the second half. The Seahawks then kicked the offense into gear and went on to rout Bennett, 5-1. Whigham led Decatur with two goals, while Liz Rougcher had a goal and an assist and Jillian Petito and Brittney Calandra each scored single goals.
