Decatur Golfers Win District Title

10/19/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity golf team completed another significant goal last week, winning the District VIII championship by edging Kent Island by just two strokes to remain unbeaten and send five players to the state championship match next week.

The hits just keep coming for Decatur, which remained unbeaten on the season with a win in the District VIII championship last week at the River Marsh course at the Hyatt in Cambridge. Decatur finished with a team-low score of 320, just ahead of Kent Island, which finished at 322. Last week, Decatur edged Kent Island for the Bayside Conference championship.

Joe Iacona led the Seahawks with a low score of 77, while Andrew Urban finished at 79 and Delaney Iacona and Matt Ruggiere each came in at 82. Delaney Iacona was the top female finisher in the district match and the female medalist. All four Decatur golfers qualified for the state championship match at College Park next week where they will compete as a team and as individuals. Decatur’s Audrey Affelder, who shot a 91 in the district match, also qualified for the state championships as an individual golfer.
