Lions Spoil Decatur Homecoming

10/05/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Visiting Queen Anne’s returned a favor to Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team last weekend and spoiled the Seahawks’ homecoming with a 23-7 win.

Last year, Decatur traveled to Queen Anne’s and ruined the Lions’ homecoming festivities with a dramatic 34-31 win. This year, Queen Anne’s returned the favor with a 23-7 win over Decatur in front of a big crowd on Homecoming last Friday. Queen Anne’s scored on three of its first four possessions, opening an early lead before most of the Seahawk faithful found their seats after pre-game celebrations.

The Lions scored on their first possession on a 34-yard touchdown pass. Queen Anne’s then scored on a three-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 still in the first quarter. Just before the half, the Lions added a 20-yard field goal to extend the lead to 17-0 heading into intermission.

Decatur finally got rolling in the third quarter after a 71-yard kickoff return set the offense up on the Queen Anne’s 28-yard line. After stalling right there, Decatur quarterback Collin Macomber attempted to draw the Queen Anne’s defense offside on a fourth-and-two situation, but the Lions held their ground.

Macomber then rushed for the first down, setting up the Decatur offense deep in the Queen Anne’s end. Macomber then hit Tim VanVonno on a 17-yard touchdown pass to cut the Lions’ lead to 17-7 with plenty of time left. However, that was as close as Decatur would get as turnovers and penalties continued to stall the offense. At the end of the day, Decatur had been penalized 14 times and mustered just 85 yards of total offense.

Queen Anne’s final score came after Decatur fumbled a punt and set the Lions up with a short field. The Lions punched it in to round out the scoring at 23-7. With the loss, Decatur dropped to 2-3 on the year and will face Easton tonight. Queen Anne’s, meanwhile, improved to 5-0.
