Medical Emergency Causes WOC Crash

8/31/2012 | By News Editor, Shawn J. Soper

WEST OCEAN CITY -- A three-vehicle accident at the intersection of Routes 50 and 611 on Wednesday morning was caused when one of the drivers suffered a medical emergency.

Around 10:42 a.m. on Wednesday, Maryland State Police responded to a multi-vehicle accident at the intersection of Routes 50 and 611 in West Ocean City. The investigation revealed the driver of a 2008 Honda CRV, identified as David Anthony Keterson, 59, was crossing Route 50 in a southbound direction at Route 611 when he suffered a medical emergency.

Keterson’s vehicle then collided with two vehicles stopped at a red traffic signal on northbound Route 611 at Route 50. One of the vehicles was a 2008 Buick LaCrosse driven by Owen Keene, 78, and his passenger, Shirley Keene, 81. The other vehicle was a 2007 GMC Sierra driven by Christopher Zuppo, 45.

The drivers and passenger in the two vehicles struck by Keterson’s vehicle refused treatment at the scene. Keterson was transported by helicopter to PRMC in Salisbury for treatment of unknown injuries due to his medical emergency. His condition and status have not been made available. Keterson has been charged with negligent driving.

Call it state police mentality....gotta charge someone in a collision...no matter if the driver was suffering from a medical emergency or not....gotta meet that quota!

I agree with Kathy 100%, how in the world do you charge someone with negligent driving if they had an unforeseen medicial emergency. This is very scary God forbid you are having a heart attack or stroke I guess you must stop and look both ways first.

I'm confused. How can one 'suffer a medical emergency' and at the same time be charged with negligent driving. That doesn't sound right nor does it seem just.
