Benefits Organized To Help With Lifeguard’s Recovery

OCEAN CITY -- Two benefits have been organized for next weekend to help a local lifeguard who was hospitalized earlier this month after a bicycle accident on Route 54.

On Aug. 4 at approximately 5:40 p.m., Delaware State Police were called to the scene of a crash involving a bicyclist that occurred west of Fenwick Island.

Beth H. Midgett was operating a 2008 Mercedes-Benz SW westbound on Lighthouse Road preparing to turn left onto Madison Avenue as Christopher M. McGervey was traveling westbound on a bicycle in the eastbound shoulder approaching Madison Avenue. 

As Midgett turned onto Madison Avenue, McGervey struck the left front of the Mercedes causing him to be ejected off the bicycle and onto the roadway.
McGervey was removed from the scene by LifeNet and airlifted to Christiana Hospital where he was listed in stable condition hours after the accident. He is now reportedly home recovering from his injuries, which included a punctured lung, serious lacerations and a broken collarbone.
Midgett and her 16-year-old passenger were not injured in the crash.
The roadway was closed for approximately an hour as the helicopter utilized the road to land. 

In order to help McGervey, who he affectionately referred to by his nickname “Gravy”, Crabcake Factory USA CEO Johnny Brooks has organized two benefits on Saturday, Aug. 25 for McGervey, who once worked for him.

“He is one of the nicest and talented people I’ve met on the shore. He is an incredible freehand artist and really loves the lifeguard lifestyle. Chris is a fan of all things Pittsburgh so you know I have to like him to stay friends,” said Brooks, a diehard Ravens fan.

According to Brooks, two events are planned to raise money for McGervey and his recovery on Saturday, Aug. 25, which coincides with the Uptown Beach Bash festivities.

Prior to the planned bikini parade, which aims to set a new Guinness World Record in Ocean City, a Bikini Car Wash will be held across the street from the Crabcake Factory from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The bar will open at 9 a.m. for bloody marys and 500 T-shirts will be given away.

Later, after the bikini parade on the beach, at 5 p.m. a food spread will be offered for the entire Ocean City Beach Patrol. Raffles will be held and a 50-50 with proceeds benefiting McGervey.

“People are encouraged to come and shake the hands of those who protect our beaches. Don't take them for granted,” Brooks said.
