BERLIN- The Berlin Cadet Dolphins got their first win of the season this week, upsetting the unbeaten Wicomico Green Terrors, 18-12, in double overtime on Tuesday.
Last November, the two teams met for the Salvation Army Red Shield League championship. This week, the Berlin Cadet Dolphins entered the rematch with Wicomico winless in three games, while the Green Terrors came in with a 3-0 record. Despite the records, the two teams played a playoff-type game on Tuesday with the Dolphins emerging with an 18-12 win in double overtime.
After a scoreless first half, Berlin scored late in the third on a long run by Jason Jackson to go up 6-0. Early in the fourth, Wicomico went on a methodical drive to tie the game at 6-6, and scored again on a 25-yard touchdown on its next possession to take a 12-16 lead. With time running out in regulation, Berlin drove down the field again and scored on a run by Jason Jackson to tie the game at 12-12.
Berlin won the toss in overtime, but failed to score on its first possession. After Wicomico failed to score, the game went into a second overtime. The Green Terrors got the ball first in the second overtime, but the Berlin defense forced a fumble and recovered. J.J. Purnell then scored on a power sweep to give Berlin the dramatic 18-12 win.
