Banner Plane Pilot Killed In Crash
BERLIN -- A single-engine banner plane crashed near a pond in the middle of a defunct golf course in Berlin yesterday mid-morning, killing the as-yet-unidentified pilot.
Just before 11 a.m. on Thursday, emergency crews responded to a reported plane crash in a remote area of the old Beach Club golf course in Berlin, which has been closed for several years. The preliminary investigation revealed the single-engine banner plane, the same planes that fly advertising messages over the resort area, struck a tree near over the golf course and crashed, killing the pilot. The identity of the pilot had not been released as of mid-afternoon on Thursday.
The Worcester County Bureau of Investigation (WCBI) and the Maryland State Police are handling the death investigation. The Berlin and Showell Volunteer Fire Companies, along with Worcester County Emergency Services, Worcester County Public Works and the Worcester County Fire Marshal, were on the scene assisting.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) were en route to the scene around mid-afternoon on Thursday to begin their investigation.
