Decatur Cagers Bow out of States

3/07/2008 | By News Editor, Shawn J. Soper

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's varsity basketball teams each made an early exit from the state regional playoffs last weekend with the boys' and girls' team bowing out in the first round.

The Decatur boys' were the number-seven seed in the Class 3A-East region playoffs and hosted tenth-seeded Centennial of Howard County in the first round last Friday at home. Unfortunately, the Seahawks were overmatched against visiting Centennial and fell to the Eagles, 86-44, to close out their season. Decatur finished with an overall record of 4-18, but the future of the program looks bright.

While the Decatur boys were facing Centennial at home last Friday, the Seahawk girls traveled to the Howard County school for their opening round game of the regional playoffs. The Seahawks fell to the Eagles, 52-17, to put an end to their season. The Decatur girls finished the 2007-2008 campaign with a 3-17 record.

While the Decatur teams have bowed out of the states, other county high school teams are cruising toward regional and possibly state titles this week. For example, the Snow Hill boys' varsity team, which finished the regular season with a perfect 21-0 record, cruised past St. Michael's, 107-59, in their opening round game at home on Tuesday. Snow Hill is the top seed in the Class 1A regional tournament.

The Pocomoke boys, seeded third in the Class 1A regional tournament, also advanced this week, getting by Crisfield, 50-45, in the second round. Snow Hill played Kent County and Pocomoke played Cambridge- South Dorchester last night in games played too late to be included in this edition.

If both teams made it through, which appeared likely, the two county rivals will face off in the Class 1A regional championship this weekend at Snow Hill. Incidentally, Snow Hill swept two regular season match-ups with Pocomoke this year, winning 83-72 on January 4 and 76-66 on February 5.
