BERLIN- Stephen Decatur varsity track team members competed in the state championship meet last week and acquitted themselves well against some of the top athletes in the state.
Eight members of the Decatur varsity outdoor track team qualified for the state championship meet last week based on their success in the regional meet. Each competed in various events and returned with good showings for the most part.
Katrina Purnell was perhaps the most successful Decatur track athlete in the state championship meet. Purnell finished fifth in the triple jump, eighth in the long jump and 13th in the high jump. Also on the girls’ side, Chloe FauntLeroy finished 13th in the 1,600.
On the boys’ side, Greg Petersen finished eighth in the high jump, Nick Craven was 10th in the shot put and Tyheam Purnell was 11th in the discus. Christopher David finished 11th in the 400, while Lance Ward finished 11th in the 800.
