Thoughts From The Publisher's Desk

November 14, 2008 - Between The Lines
The political season continues, at least in Berlin, where a three-man race has developed for the District 1 council seat, a vacancy created by Gee Williams' recent election to mayor. This is a compelling situation. As we learned in the October election, three-way races in a small town can be interesting, and it's really anyone's game because the vote becomes diluted. A certainty in most special elections is low voter turnout, and this election on Dec. 16 should be no different. In last month's...READ MORE

Extreme Reactions

November 14, 2008 - Editorial
The reactions heard over the last week after a clear majority of state voters said they support slots machines in Maryland have ranged from the ridiculous to the naïve. There comes a time when folks need to get a grasp of reality. Yes, slots are coming to Maryland, specifically and most likely the Ocean Downs racetrack, but all the hysterical people out there bemoaning last week's vote as the end to our existence as a lovely place to raise a family need to get a grip. On the opposite end of the...READ MORE

Howard Reaches Out Editor: Election time is over for Ocean City and the dust is beginning to settle. The recent election cycle was of special interest to me this go round because for the first time in 12 years I wasn't personally involved - other than being an interested, voting citizen. I chose not to run for the council again because I felt it was time for me to move on. I don't want to rehash the past 12 years. It was a great honor for me to serve the town.
