Owner Turns Coffee Fascination Into New Area Business

WEST OCEAN CITY – Coffee connoisseurs can delight in a new West Ocean City business designed to cater to those in search of a serious brew.

More than 30 varieties of coffee are now available at Coastal Coffee Roasting. The shop, which advertises the freshest coffee on the beach, is located on Route 50 in West Ocean City.

“We really pride ourselves on producing a good product,” said Jamie Davis, the shop’s owner.

Davis and Tom Dinneen opened Coastal Coffee Roasting May 9 after moving to West Ocean City from Virginia. Davis, who has spent the past two decades roasting coffee, said they were drawn to the area after a few RV trips to the resort.

“The people here are phenomenal,” she said.

At Coastal Coffee Roasting, she and Dinneen offer both wholesale and retail service. In the front half of the shop, customers can browse through jars upon jars of whole beans that are sold in gas sealed resealable bags designed to keep them fresh. Varieties available range from Columbian Supremo to Mexican Chiapas to Ethiopian Harrar. In all there are 30 different coffees, seven of which are organic. In addition, the shop sells Monin syrups, Ghiradelli chocolate and an array of loose leaf teas.

Davis is eager to help anyone who’s not sure what they’re looking for once they come in.

“Right now we do daily samples of medium roast and dark roast,” she said. “We talk about flavors and taste profiles and I can direct them to the coffees they’d like.”

For her, coffee is a passion. Her parents’ first dates were over coffee in New Orleans. She herself discovered she loved the taste of it as a young child.

“I’ve been fascinated by coffee my entire life,” she said. “I was the five-year-old kid who constantly snuck mom’s coffee.”

That early fascination has since turned into a career.  Standing beside the shop’s immense Diedrich roaster, Davis described the way green coffee beans were poured into the device and heated up. The flavor of the resulting brew, she explained, is based on the bean itself — where it’s from and its density — along with the time and temperature at which it’s heated.

“The beans are all different,” she said.

Davis says that the high-quality coffee beans her shop sells are something that aren’t available just anywhere. Though there are suppliers elsewhere on the shore, she says there are none in Ocean City.

“There are so many people that look for great coffee,” she said. “There’s not another roaster in the Ocean City area.”

She hopes that the array of inventory and services offered, which include gift baskets and private labeling, will bring patrons to Coastal Coffee. She says the store even sells coffee in k-cups, which are notable because they’re compostable and recyclable.

“I can even private label these,” she said. “Who doesn’t drink coffee? Give dad something other than a tie for Father’s Day.”

The shop will be closed this weekend as Davis is attending a memorial service for her father but in general is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
