After Loss, South Title Still Undetermined

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity baseball team dropped its first contest of the season last week, falling to Parkside, 2-0, at home last Friday, but the jury is still out on who will represent the Bayside South in the conference championship game at Perdue Stadium next week.

After reeling off 14 straight wins to start the season, the Seahawks fell to the Rams, 2-0, last Friday for the first blemish on an otherwise perfect record. Throughout the week, word spread through the school and among the players’ parents the single loss to the Rams could inexplicably cost the Seahawks the Bayside South championship.

Apparently, there is a tiebreaking scenario in the Bayside Conference bylaws that could hand the Bayside South title to the Rams based on what happened in the final eight games of the season. However, Decatur Athletic Director Don Howard said late Tuesday the conference had notified him that no team had yet been declared the champion and the teams must complete their schedules.

In any case, any scenario that left the Seahawks on the outside looking in at the conference championship game would appear unfair on the surface. Decatur is 14-1 with a 9-1 record in the conference, while Parkside is 12-3 with an 8-3 conference mark. The two teams split head-to-head with the Seahawks beating the Rams, 12-5, on the road back on April 8.

Meanwhile, the weather this week has wreaked havoc on the remaining schedule for both teams. The Seahawks were scheduled to face Bennett on the road yesterday, but that contest was in jeopardy with the forecast. Decatur is scheduled to close out the regular season with a non-conference game against Dover at Perdue Stadium on Saturday.
