Seahawks Sweep Two, Back On Track

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team is back on the right track in the Bayside Conference after a pair of wins this week.

The Seahawks routed Bennett, 67-17, last on the road, the beat Mardela, 50-42, on Tuesday in a tough, foul-plagued physical contest. Against Bennett last week, Dayona Godwin led the Seahawks with 31 points, while Amaya Mumford and Rachel Florek each pitched in 11.

Back in action on the road again on Tuesday against Mardela, the Decatur girls pushed and shoved their way to the 50-42 victory in the hard-fought game that saw nearly 50 fouls called and both teams struggling to keep a team on the floor at the end because of foul trouble.

Decatur took a six-point lead into halftime on Tuesday against Mardela. Godwin got off to a slow start by her standards, but scored 12 points in the second quarter to give the Seahawks a little cushion heading into the break. Decatur would need the cushion as Mardela continued to battle and chip away at the lead through the third quarter.

Decatur went on a 9-2 run to start the fourth quarter, fueled largely by Mumford. The run gained some separation for the Seahawks, who hung on for the important 50-42 win on the road. Godwin led all scorers with 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Mumford finished with a double-double including 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The win over Mardela was the third straight since the second half of the season started after the holiday break. Decatur lost to Bayside rival Pocomoke by one point just before the holidays and then dropped a pair of games against tough competition in Governor’s Challenge.

The Seahawks are now 8-3 overall, including an 8-1 mark in the Bayside South. They face another tough stretch with Wicomico on the road next Tuesday, Indian River next Friday and a rematch on the road at Pocomoke on January 26.
