Seahawk Alumni Basketball Event Next Weekend

BERLIN- Six decades of Stephen Decatur High School basketball history will be on display next weekend with an alumni tournament featuring some of the school’s top players from 1954 to the present.

The first-ever Bragging Rights tournament is set for next Saturday, right in the middle of Thanksgiving weekend. The tournament will feature eight men’s teams competing in a single-elimination format with bragging rights on the line. The hope is the event will become an annual tradition at Decatur.

The oldest men’s team will feature players from 1954 to 1990. The other seven men’s teams will feature players from two-to three-year periods up until 2014. For example, the first game on November 28 at 11 a.m. will feature the 1991-1995 men’s team against the 2003-2005 team. First-round games will be played on the hour all day on November 28, followed by semifinal games set for 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

At 5 p.m., the Stephen Decatur women’s alumni All-Star game will take place featuring an Old School team of players from 1999 and before against a New School team, including player from 2000 to 2014. Finally, the event will culminate with the men’s bragging rights championship game at 6 p.m.

The goal is to raise over $6,800 for a Shoot-A-Way machine for the Stephen Decatur basketball program. There will be a $5 entry fee for spectators and the proceeds will go toward the purchase of the Shoot-A-Way machine. Another goal of course is to celebrate six decades of success for the Seahawk program with alumni now scattered all over the region expected to either compete or attend the event on Thanksgiving weekend.
