Senior Ross Dickerson, a varsity lacrosse player and face-off specialist this week signed a national letter of intent to play and attend school next year at the University of Tampa. Senior Hanna Nechay, a standout field hockey player at Worcester, will join the fledgling Queen’s University program in Charlotte, N.C. next year.

Dickerson was already an accomplished gymnast when he decided to take up lacrosse as a freshman at Worcester. In four short years, he improved to one of the top face-off specialists in the region. Dickerson, who also just earned his pilot’s license this week, said he visited several schools in Florida and immediately fell in love with the University of Tampa because of its close proximity to aviation programs.

“I went down there at spring break and visited some other schools and Tampa just had more of a college feel,” he said. “With its lacrosse program, it just fit right.”

Dickerson said he expects to get an opportunity to contribute almost right away.

“It’s a fairly new program just four years in and I’m confident I’ll get the opportunity to step in a make a difference,” he said. “With the face-off position, more teams are going with multiple players in that spot and I’m confident I’ll be able to earn one of those positions.”

Meanwhile, Nechay, a senior captain this year on Worcester’s prolific varsity field hockey team, said she also visited several schools before deciding on Queen’s University.

“I started my college search as a freshman and I knew I wanted to play anywhere from Division I to Division III,” she said. “I looked at a lot of different schools, but we were like ‘let’s look at one more’ and I visited Queens and knew it was the place for me.”

Like Dickerson, Nechay will have an opportunity to make a big difference almost immediately at Queens.

“It’s just starting out with its first year of a varsity program and I’m excited to be a part of that,” she said. “There are just six girls right now and eight more have committed, so I’ll have the opportunity to step right in. I play forward, but I’ve been training very hard and will play anywhere the coaches want to put me.”
