Pocomoke Continues Late Coach’s Legacy

POCOMOKE- After losing legendary coach Susan Pusey this summer, the Pocomoke varsity field hockey team took a big step in continuing her legacy last week with a 5-0 win over Kent Island in the Bayside Conference championship.

Pusey passed away in July at the age of 56, leaving behind a remarkable legacy at Pocomoke as varsity field hockey coach, mentor and friend. Pusey was well known and well liked far beyond the Pocomoke High School community, where she led the Warriors dominating field hockey team since 1991. With just around 300 students, Pocomoke is the smallest of the county’s public high schools, but pound for pound has collected more than its fair of state championships.

The Pocomoke High field hockey program has won 18 state championships, 16 of which came with Pusey at the helm. She won her first state championship in 1992 and reeled off five straight from 1994 to 1998. Pocomoke won again in 2001, then won a remarkable eight in a row from 2003 to 2010.

Despite the loss of its matriarch, the Pocomoke field hockey team took a big first step in continuing her legacy at the small south Worcester County school last week with a 5-0 win over Kent Island in the Bayside Conference championship. When the state tournament brackets were released this week, Pocomoke garnered the top seed in the 1A-East Region Section II and will face the winner of the first round game between Crisfield and Washington next week.
