Parkside Hands Decatur Fifth Straight Loss

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team’s losing skid hit five last weekend with a 27-14 loss to Parkside on the road in a rare Saturday game.

The Seahawks opened the season with three straight wins, but ran into a buzz saw in the middle of the season with four straight against tough Bayside North opponents. Their 3-0 record turned to 3-4 after the treacherous stretch, but there was reason for optimism with a return to play against another Bayside South rival.

However, the outcome was much the same for Decatur, which, despite key injuries and illnesses, has been competitive during the streak. Last Saturday against Parkside, the Seahawks spotted the Rams a 21-0 lead early before settling down on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Darion McKenzie ran for a four-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 21-7 with plenty of time left.

Parkside scored on its ensuing possession to push the lead to 27-7, but Decatur answered with another score to cut the lead to 27-14 at the half. Neither team scored in the second half and Parkside held on to the 27-14 win to push the Seahawks to 3-5 on the season. It won’t get much easier for Decatur this week when it faces another Bayside South rival in Bennett at home on Friday. Decatur finishes with its annual regular season finale against county rival Snow Hill next week.
