Candidates must meet rigorous eligibility requirements to be eligible for certification. Achieving the CDE® credential demonstrates to people with diabetes and employers that the health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality of care for people with diabetes. Motsko has been a CDE at Apple Discount Drugs Diabetes Center for over five years and has worked with more than 700 patients with diabetes.

“The reward I receive comes when I see positive lifestyle changes in the people I educate,” said Motsko. “Learning how to manage a disease like diabetes isn’t easy but with the right tools, information and support – it can be done successfully.”

Currently, there are over 18,800 diabetes educators who hold NCBDE certification.

Law Firm Expands

WEST OCEAN CITY – The Bel Air-based law firm Shaffer, McLauchlin & Stover, LLC has expanded its practice to the Eastern Shore.

On Wednesday, Sept. 23, the firm will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of its new office located at 9921 Stephen Decatur Highway in West Ocean City. The new Eastern Shore location has been a goal of the firm since its inception in 2011.

“When you examine demographic data of households in Harford County, there is a trend for many older area residents to retire in the greater Ocean City area. Our new office gives those clients access to our firm’s experience in both elder law and real estate law,” said firm partner Gina Shaffer.

Law partner Eric McLauchlin also notes that many of the firm’s business clients from the Bel Air region own vacation or investment properties on the Eastern Shore.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. on Sept. 23 at the new office, with a reception to follow at 5 p.m. at the Sunset Grille.

Anyone planning on attending is asked to RSVP to Kim Perkins at 410-420-7992 or [email protected] by Monday, Sept. 21.

Restaurant Marks Anniversary

REHOBOTH BEACH — When SoDel Concepts opened NorthEast Seafood Kitchen in May 2005, the restaurant was a bit of a gamble. Chef Matt Haley, founder of SoDel Concepts, had a solid history of success in the hospitality industry. However, NorthEast Seafood Kitchen is located in a strip mall in Ocean View, which in 2005 was just starting to experience growth. It was just a few miles from Route 1, but whether residents and tourists venture inland was unknown.

They did and they do.

“NorthEast Seafood Kitchen might be the greatest SoDel success story,” said Scott Kammerer, the current president and CEO of SoDel Concepts, which owns eight coastal restaurants, Plate Catering, Big Thunder Roadside Kitchen, a food truck, and hospitality management and consulting divisions. “Today, it’s an incredibly busy year-round restaurant, and it has an incredibly loyal clientele, who support the restaurant and the staff.”

On Friday, Oct. 2, from 5-7 p.m., the restaurant is celebrating its milestone anniversary with happy hour drink specials, appetizers and the debut of a commemorative video, which will be shown on the half hour during that time period. The video was created by W Films and SoDel Films and was directed by Rob Waters.

The restaurant has grown over the years to include a landscaped courtyard – home to many lobster dinners. The 2,000-square-foot expansion in 2014 added 42 extra seats, 14 of which are at a bar that features craft beer from local breweries and craft cocktails.

A number of employees who worked at NorthEast Seafood Kitchen are still with SoDel Concepts, including Lindsey Jacona, now the comptroller; Andrea Medford, now an administer for SoDel; Jason Dietterick, now the chef at Bluecoast Seafood Grill; Andrew Dickinson, the company’s graphic designer; and Elodia Morales, a prep cook.

The celebration on Oct. 2 is deserved, Kammerer said. “NorthEast Seafood Kitchen is now a destination restaurant for people living and visiting the area round it,” he said. “And it’s an anchor in a great community.”

New Station Announced

BERLIN — Adams Radio Group of Delmarva has signed on “Your Country K 107.7 FM” to give Delmarva country listeners another choice with a powerful new signal.

“Our research shows listeners in the area want a country radio station that won’t overload them with commercials. We’ve quadrupled the power on WKHI-FM, blanketing the entire region with signal coverage as good or better than the older country competitor,” said Phil LoCascio, Market Manager for Adams Radio Group of Delmarva. “We’re proving our commitment to play the most country music by kicking off The All New ‘Your Country K107-7’ with an incredible 50,000 country songs in a row.”

A local on-air staff will be hired to follow America’s Morning Show with Blair Garner. “AMS” will start after the 50,000 songs-in-a-row promise has been fulfilled. K107-7 will also be Delmarva’s official home of “Nash Nights Live” weekday nights, “Kickin’ it With Kix Brooks” overnights and “Red Cup Country” Saturday nights.

“These are exciting times for Country fans in the Delmarva Region. Playing 50,000 songs in a row is unheard of, and really proves K107-7 is all about the listeners,” Garner said. “We’re busy making plans for the show’s debut and can’t wait to welcome folks all over Delmarva to the ‘America’s Morning Show’ family.”

Programs Recertified

SALISBURY — The Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute at Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) has announced the recertification of its cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation programs by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).

Both programs and their leadership were recognized for a fifth consecutive, three-year cycle for their commitment to improving the quality of life by enhancing standards of care.

PRMC’s cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation programs participated in an application process that requires extensive documentation of the program’s practices.

AACVPR Program Certification is the only peer-review accreditation process designed to review individual programs for adherence to standards and guidelines developed and published by AACVPR and other professional societies. Each program is reviewed by the AACVPR Program Certification Committee and Certification is awarded by the AACVPR Board of Directors.

“Recertification reflects that our program meets national standards to ensure quality care, consistency in the delivery of services, evidence of tracking clinical outcomes and program operational standards in compliance with AACVPR Program Guidelines, JCAHO and Medicare regulations,” said Pamela Caldwell, Director of Cardiovascular Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Preventive Cardiology at PRMC.

Cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation programs, like those at PRMC, are designed to help people with cardiovascular problems (e.g., heart attacks, coronary artery bypass graft surgery) and pulmonary problems (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and respiratory symptoms) recover faster and improve their quality of life. Both programs include exercise, education, counseling and support for patients and their families.
