BERLIN- Former Worcester Prep and U.S. Naval Academy soccer standout Martin Sanchez will captain the U.S. team at the 6th Military World Games in South Korea this fall.

Sanchez was chosen for the U.S. team as a result of his outstanding play in the Armed Forces Cup, a tournament played each year between four branches of the armed services including Navy, Army, Air Force and Marines. A total of 29 naval personnel from all over the globe were invited to San Diego for two weeks of intense training and trials before the final 17 spots on the U.S. team were finalized.

Sanchez was chosen as captain of this year’s team and led the squad in assists while scoring three goals in the Armed Forces Cup. At the conclusion of the Armed Forces Cup, an All-Tournament team was selected to represent the U.S. in the World Military Games in South Korea this fall. Currently deployed at a naval base in the Indian Ocean, Sanchez will return to San Diego in mid-September for training before heading to South Korea for the World Military Games. The U.S. will open against host South Korea before playing Algeria, Qatar and France in pool play.

Sanchez was a star at Worcester Prep for four years under then-Coach Tom Westcott. During Sanchez’s run at Worcester, the Mallards won four straight ESIAC championships. Sanchez had a stellar career at the Naval Academy, where he was team captain for this senior year. He was named to the All-American team and was enshrined in the Naval Academy Athletics Hall of Fame following graduation. He is the son of Denise Vickers and Steve McGee of Salisbury.
