OCEAN CITY — “We hope that our donation will encourage others in the business community and the private sector to step up and share the good fortune they’ve found in Ocean City and Worcester County by ‘giving back’ to something that impacts our future — education.”

That’s what Macky Stansell had to say after he and his wife, Pam, owners of Macky’s Bayside Bar & Grill, became one of the first Champions of Education, donating $100,000 towards the $1 million goal of the newly formed Worcester County Education Foundation (WCEF).

When WCEF Vice Chairman Greg Shockley approached the Stansells about a contribution, Stansell explained that he and Pam are strong supporters of Coastal Hospice but they’ve always believed that supporting education should be a priority of everyone in the community. Although he and his wife do not have children of their own, Stansell considers every one of his young staff one of his own.

“Geez, once we get to know these kids, of course we worry about them and although we appreciate their contribution working for us during their college summers, we encourage all of them to finish their degree and move on after college,” Stansell said. “I tell them to get out there, earn a living and contribute to society. I can’t tell you how happy it makes Pam and I when we run into a former employee who has opened a business or joined a law firm or has been hired to manage a local hotel. The kids who return to Ocean City and contribute to the community all started with a good education. We need to keep that going and you can’t wait for adequate learning tools, these kids need them now.”

Shockley agreed, saying, “students are our future. Our goal is to provide every student with equal access to a world class education and to support our teachers with grants and the tools necessary to prepare our students for jobs that haven’t even been invented yet. In order to prepare our students for tomorrow, we need to provide these educational tools today.”

The WCEF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that taps into community resources, creating a source of perpetual funding to help fill budgetary gaps that might otherwise prevent teachers, students, and schools from acquiring the necessary tools to teach and learn in today’s fast paced digital environment.
