BERLIN- Hoping to capture some of the magic from recent years when several of its teams advanced to state and regional championships, the Berlin Little League his week opened up District 8 All-Star tournaments for both boys and girls and several age groups.

The Berlin Blue 7-8 All-Star team got the Berlin Little League program off to a fast start in the summer All-Star tournament season last week, sweeping two tournaments. The 7-8 team won the Fruitland Tournament championship and followed that performance with a second win in as many tries at the Willards Tournament.

In the championship game of the Willards Tournament, Berlin trailed 8-1 heading into their final at-bat and rallied for eight runs to pull off the dramatic 9-8 win in the title game over the Lower Sussex All-Stars. The Berlin 7-8 team is now 10-1 in All-Star competition and will compete this weekend in its own tournament at home.

The Berlin Little League competed in the Tournament of Champions last week and fell to eventual winner West Salisbury, 6-2. The Berlin Little League Intermediate team split two games in pool play this week, routing Delmar, 19-2, before falling to West Salisbury, 14-2 last Sunday. In the West Salisbury game, the Intermediate All-Stars got hits from Gavin Bunting, Ridge Watson and Alex Gaddis. With the loss, the Intermediate team will go down to the loser’s bracket where it will have an opportunity to battle back to the championship round.

The District 8 10-11 tournament got underway on Thursday with Berlin facing East Wicomico in the opening game. The District 8 Junior League tournament gets underway next week and Berlin will face West Salisbury in the opening round. If Berlin advances, it will face the winner of the opening round game between Snow Hill and Somerset. The District 8 Major League tournament also gets underway next week. Berlin is scheduled to face Delmar on July 9 and Fruitland on July 11.

The District 8 girls’ softball Major League tournament also got underway this week with Berlin routing Willards, 12-0. Jessica Delisi was the winning pitcher and had three hits at the plate, while Nadia Bullock also had three hits and Kayla Boecker hit a home run.

The Berlin Little League is hosting the state Major League tournament beginning July 11. Five districts from all over Maryland will be represented in the tournament with the winners advancing to the regional championships in New York later this month.
