BERLIN- After two straight weather-related cancellations, Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team finally opened its 3A-East region tournament with a 79-25 win over Northeast on Wednesday.

Ice and snow kept Northeast from coming to Decatur on Monday and Tuesday to face the Seahawks, moving the game to Wednesday and playing havoc with the schedule. Once the game was finally played, the Seahawks left little to chance, jumping out to a 41-7 lead at the half and cruising to the 79-25 win to advance. Dayona Godwin scored 22 points and Marina Jones added 18.

The Seahawks will now face second-seeded Northern, but it remains uncertain just when the game will be played. With schools out on Thursday because of the latest storm and Friday in doubt, the next game will likely be moved back again.
