Mallards Edge Sabres To Avenge Early Loss

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity basketball team edged old rival Saints Peter and Paul, 25-24, on Tuesday to avenge an earlier loss to the Sabres in January.

The remarkable season continued for the Mallards with a win over Saints Peter and Paul on Monday. The Mallards were in the midst of a seven-game winning streak and had won eight of nine when they visited Saints Peter and Paul back on January 9, but the Sabres prevailed, 32-26, in a tight, defensive struggle.

In the rematch on Monday, a similar scenario played out with Worcester edging the Sabres by a single point, 25-24. Sophie Brennan led the Mallards with seven points while Grace Tunis added six. The two games combined were decided by a mere five points.

The win over the Sabres on Monday was the second straight for the Worcester girls. The Mallards beat Salisbury Christian, 43-31, last Friday. Brennan and Molly Soule each scored 14 points in that win. The win over Salisbury Christian last Friday came after a rare loss to Delmarva Christian last Wednesday, 55-47. The Mallards’ record now stands at 13-3 on the season. The Worcester girls finish the regular season with a road game against Holly Grove tonight and will begin the ESIAC playoffs next week.
